Exporting websites to other PCs

Exporting websites to other PCs from the security zone

The Microsoft browser manages an integrated zone model in which web addresses can be defined as ‘Trustworthy Sites’ using the security settings. Internet contents which you do not trust completely can be placed in the ‘Restricted Sites’ category. Many entries get added to this list after some time. You want to now transfer this configuration to a new computer in the easiest possible way.

Web addresses that you have defined as secure and restricted are stored in the registry. You can export the required data from there to read it later on a new PC.

Start the registry editor and open the

‘HKEY_CURENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\InternetSettings\ZoneMap\Do mains’ key.

Select the entry and open file ‘File -> Export Registry File’. Type a name such as ‘zone settings’ in the following dialog. See to it that the ‘Selected branch’ option is activated under ‘Export range’ and the previously selected registry entry has been entered. Confirm by clicking ‘Save’.

The REG file that is created now be copied to a new PC where you can simply start it with double-click. After the obligatory confirmation query, which you will answer with ‘Yes’, the data is added to the registry.

Note: Many times harmful websites try to add themselves to the list of trustworthy sites using this key. You can check whether there are other unknown entries for the Windows update in addition to those you have added and the default values you have set.
